Capital Gains Tax Calculator

Last updated · September 2026

When you sell listed equity shares or equity mutual fund units at a profit, the gain is taxed differently depending on how long you held the investment. Shares held for 12 months or less attract Short-Term Capital Gains (STCG) tax, while shares held for more than 12 months attract Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax, which comes with an annual exemption.

Enter your buy price, sell price and quantity, choose the holding period, and this calculator estimates your taxable gain and the tax payable using the rates applicable after the July 2024 Union Budget.

Capital Gains Tax Calculator

Estimate STCG/LTCG tax on listed equity shares and equity mutual funds.

Based on rates applicable to listed equity shares/equity mutual funds after the July 2024 Budget: STCG 20% (held ≤ 12 months), LTCG 12.5% with ₹1.25 lakh exemption per financial year (held > 12 months). Does not include other capital gains you may have already used against the exemption, surcharge or cess.

Current STCG and LTCG rates on equity

For listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual funds, Short-Term Capital Gains (holding period of 12 months or less) are taxed at a flat 20%. Long-Term Capital Gains (holding period of more than 12 months) are taxed at 12.5%, but the first ₹1.25 lakh of long-term gains in a financial year is exempt from tax — the exemption applies to your total LTCG across all equity investments in that year, not per transaction.

What this calculator does not include

This tool estimates tax on a single trade in isolation. It does not account for surcharge (applicable at higher income levels), health and education cess of 4% on the tax amount, other capital losses you may be able to set off against this gain, or LTCG exemption already consumed by other equity sales in the same financial year unless you enter that amount manually.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as long-term for equity shares?

A holding period of more than 12 months from the date of purchase qualifies listed equity shares and equity mutual fund units for long-term capital gains treatment.

Is the ₹1.25 lakh LTCG exemption per stock or total?

It’s a total exemption across all your long-term equity capital gains in a financial year, not per stock or per transaction.

Are these rates the same for debt mutual funds?

No. Debt mutual funds are taxed differently — gains are typically added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, without the indexation or LTCG benefit that applies to equity. This calculator is only for listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual funds.

Does this include cess and surcharge?

No, the tax shown is the base rate (20% or 12.5%) only. Health and education cess of 4% and any applicable surcharge are additional and not included here.
