Zero Brokerage Apps: What’s the Catch and How They Actually Make Money

"Zero brokerage" doesn't mean free. Here's exactly where these apps actually make their money, and what to check first.

The short version: “zero brokerage” doesn’t mean investing is free. These apps still make money — just from other charges, or other parts of your financial behaviour. Here’s where the money actually comes from.

What “zero brokerage” actually covers

Most zero-brokerage apps waive the fee on equity delivery trades specifically — buying and holding shares beyond the same day. That’s a genuinely real saving compared to older, traditional full-service brokers.

But brokerage is only one of several charges on a trade. Exchange transaction charges, SEBI turnover fees, stamp duty, GST, and depository charges still apply. These apply regardless of what the app charges for brokerage itself.

Where these apps actually make money

Intraday and futures & options trades usually still carry a flat fee per order. This applies even on apps that waive delivery brokerage. Active traders, especially in F&O, generate meaningful revenue here.

Many apps also earn interest on the cash sitting idle in your trading account, before you’ve invested it. This is a real, if less visible, revenue stream, especially across a large user base.

Some platforms earn through payment for order flow arrangements, or by routing orders in ways that benefit their own revenue. Margin trading facilities, where the app lends you money to trade, are another common source of interest income.

Why “free” isn’t automatically better

A zero-brokerage app with poor order execution, frequent outages, or weak customer support can cost you more indirectly than a slightly costlier alternative. That’s especially true if a technical glitch happens at a bad moment.

Some apps also push users toward frequent trading through gamified design, notifications, or leaderboards. This can increase your actual costs and risk, even if each individual trade appears to be free.

What to actually check before choosing one

Look at intraday and F&O charges specifically, not just the headline “zero brokerage” claim. That’s where most active trading costs actually accumulate.

Check whether the app is SEBI-registered, and read recent user reviews about order execution reliability. If you plan to use margin trading facility, understand exactly how its interest is calculated first.

Frequently asked questions

Does zero brokerage mean investing has no cost at all?

No. Regulatory charges like exchange fees, stamp duty, and GST still apply, and many apps still charge for intraday or F&O trades.

How do zero-brokerage apps make money if delivery trades are free?

Mainly through intraday and F&O order fees, interest on idle account cash, margin trading facility interest, and sometimes order flow arrangements.

Is a zero-brokerage app automatically the cheapest option overall?

Not necessarily — active traders using intraday or F&O products can end up paying more depending on the app’s specific fee structure.

What should I check beyond the brokerage fee before choosing an app?

Intraday and F&O charges, SEBI registration status, order execution reliability, and how margin trading facility interest is calculated.

Can gamified app design actually cost me money?

Indirectly, yes — features that encourage frequent trading can increase your transaction costs and risk, even when individual trades look free.
